Our 'goodness'

Never has society been so judgement free yet so full of it. While the internet and social media have given people an area to provide their unsolicited opinion, we feel a freedom to do what we feel is good regardless of the judgement of others. This is the current mentality of the culture we live in today. We should be free to do what we, as individuals, feel is good without care for what others think or who we disappoint, because those that truly love us will accept us regardless of the choices we make. While this may appear to open up a world for self-discovery and self-assurance, our own subjective moral reasoning and outlook only take us so far. We try to obtain materialistic objects, gain status or an action to find this ‘goodness’.  Our souls are hungry to satisfy a deep void in our hearts and what if there is a way to fill this void? I think a way in which we can find some fulfillment is by selflessly helping others before ourselves, now more than ever. Stories about racial injustice, terrorism, violence, sexual crimes, the refugee crisis, politics and more plague the world around us. We need to lend out a helping hand to those in need whether it be a neighbor or someone across the world. By looking beyond ourselves and cater to the needs of others, I believe we can find and live a meaningful life. Even seemingly simple things such as smiling and saying hi could be enough to brighten someone’s day. The world is broken in many ways but we need to put our best foot forward to help bring it together, or at least help cease it. We hopefully then develop a greater sense of purpose in our lives. We are not all perfect, but with practice, as we become less self-seeking and serve others, I believe we will find ourselves.
